ENROLMENT

PHS accepts enrolments for students from preschool to Year 7 with priority given to children who live in the Para Hills area. Please phone 8264 2033 to enquire about enrolment forms or to organise a visit to the school. Alternatively, you can make inquiries via our Front Office off Frances Avenue in school hours.

Our special small classes provide for children with a verified disability with enrolment managed via an application process available through the student’s current school.

The Department for Education requires us to sight a birth certificate (copy) or proof of age when enrolling students.

Para Hills Preschool is on site and offers full time (15 hours) preschool. Please phone 8264 2033 for more information. Registrations of Interest for Preschool Enrolments can be obtained from our Front Office off Frances Avenue in school hours.

CUSTODY

We respect the confidentiality of family situations; however, we ask parents to inform the Principal or nominee at enrolment of relevant details regarding the family situation (e.g. custody and/or access). The school may require verification of the information you provide. It is advisable for you to also identify who has permission to collect your child in an emergency.

 

ATTENDANCE

Regular attendance is vital for your child/ren’s successful learning and social connections. Good attendance is an indicator of good academic success.

If your child is sick, he/she should remain at home until well. It is a legal requirement for you to notify the school about children’s absences. The most convenient way to do this is by phoning the school on 8264 2033 or directly to the classroom teacher via their preferred method of contact. We are required to record the reason for absences particularly when this relates to an illness which may be contagious, or which will affect the child’s performance at school.

If your child arrives late or leaves early, it is a requirement of the Department for Education that this is recorded. Parents are required to sign students in/out at the front office before proceeding to the classroom.

SCHOOL HOURS

8:30am – Grounds open and a teacher is on duty on the asphalt.

8:50am – Morning session

10:50am – Recess

11:15am – Midday Session

12:45pm – Lunch Eating Time (in classes)

12:55pm – Lunch Play

1:20pm Afternoon session

3:00pm – Dismissal

When picking students up, adults are asked to wait at an agreed upon location outside for your child/ren. This helps to ease the congestion in the corridors at a busy time of the day.

On the last day of each term, school is dismissed at 2pm.

 

DRESS CODE

All students are required to follow our school’s dress code of red, black and white.

Logo printed polo shirts, jumpers and bucket style hats are available for purchase from the Front Office. Other items such as plain red jumpers (not black) and plain black shorts/pants/skirts and dresses are available from local retailers. Clothing with labels/prints are not part of the dress code.

Hat: Sun Safe approved red bucket or wide brimmed style hats with the school logo.  These are compulsory from August 1st – 30th April.

Tops: Red polo tops/school jumpers with the school logo; red or white plain polos; plain red jumpers and jackets.

Bottoms: Black track pants; trousers; cargo pants or shorts; shorts (minimum 15cm inside leg measurement only) or skorts.

Footwear: Enclosed shoes/sneakers are required for safe and active play.

Please ensure that all clothing is labelled.

 

 

CANTEEN

Lunches can be ordered daily through the school from a local deli. Lunch orders are collected each morning at 9:30am. Any orders placed after this time will not be able to be fulfilled.  Food is not available for purchase at recess times.

 

BEHAVIOUR

Rational Emotive Behaviour Education (REBE) is used as a whole school behaviour management approach to help students identify self-defeating thoughts and feelings, challenge the rationality of those feelings, and replace them with healthier, more productive beliefs. We aim to educate (not punish) students to manage their own behaviour and learning. Parents will be informed of behavioural concerns and if students need additional support from the office. Classroom teachers will communicate this information to parents and can be approached any day to schedule a meeting to discuss issues. We aim for calm, safe learning environments. At Para Hills School, learning leads behaviour, behaviour does not control the learning!

COMMUNICATION

Our school newsletter is published fortnightly on Thursdays. Each family is provided with a copy via the eldest child at the school and is also made available on our website here. Teachers publish a classroom newsletter each term to keep you up to date with your child’s class.

Class Dojo

Our school uses the Class Dojo app to communicate with families, provide instant feedback and to keep digital portfolios of student work.

Class Dojo provides easy 2-way communication between home and school with the ability to direct message individuals (in a range of different languages) and to share information via the School Story feed and also Class Story for individual class news.

This free app is available for android and apple devices.

Diaries/Communication Books – Students are issued with a diary or communication book at the beginning of the year. This book is an important form of communication between the class and home and is expected to be kept up to date. Parents are asked to look at this regularly for notes etc… and sign as necessary.

 

MEDICAL INFORMATION /EMERGENCY CONTACT

Parents are asked to complete an enrolment form and regularly update as required, a medical/emergency contact form for their child. If a serious medical situation arises, an ambulance will be contacted.

Parents are asked to contact the front office in cases where children contract communicable diseases. Children who are ill with an infectious disease must not attend school until they have completely recovered.  For more detailed information, visit SA Heath (http://tinyurl.com/aqy74mp).

 

First Aid – A staff member is on first aid duty in the office at all times. If a child is injured in any way at recess or lunch, the child must first tell a teacher on yard duty. They will be sent to the office if necessary. Teachers on yard duty carry a first aid kit for minor injuries.

Emergency Evacuation and Invacuation Procedures – The school had developed emergency evacuation and invacuation procedures. Staff and students practise these procedures each term.

 

SCHOOL FEES

Your child will bring home a Materials and Services Tax Invoice within the first week of term 1. Please settle this account as soon as possible. If you find it difficult to pay the fees all at once, please contact the Finance Officer at the school because arrangements can be made to pay by instalments. Payments can be made either by cash, VISA or Mastercard and QKR app.

This fee covers a range of services including student resources, the cost of technology, grounds maintenance and special projects undertaken by the Governing Council, etc.

 

SCHOOL CARD SCHEME

School Card is available to families based on family income, additional financial hardship through unemployment, sickness, change in circumstances etc.  Annual application for government assistance is required and provides free stationery and other materials. (Department for Education has cut-off dates after which no late forms can be submitted)

PAYMENTS

When money is required for various educational purposes i.e. excursions, visiting performers, special events etc., payment can be made in person between 8:30am – 9:30am and 2:30pm – 3:15 pm any school day at the Front Office.  Payment may be made by either cash, VISA or Mastercard and QKR.

Children are encouraged to bring all money in envelopes clearly stating name, room number, amount and consent form if applicable.

 

PARKING/ROAD SAFETY

Parking is limited around our school and you may need to park in surrounding streets and walk with your children.

Please take care at all times as before and after school are the busiest times of the day with many families crossing the road. Please model road safe behaviours and use marked crossings where available.

Children may ride their bicycle or scooter to school, store and lock them in the bike racks provided. Bicycle and scooter riders must dismount upon when on school surrounds and are reminded that the wearing of protective helmets is law.

 

TELEPHONE MESSAGES TO/FROM STUDENTS

If you wish the school to relay telephone messages to children, please ring before 2:30 pm. We will make every effort to get the message to students, but cannot guarantee this. In emergencies or for other important reasons, students can seek permission from their teacher to contact their families or carers from a phone in the Office.

Personal mobile phones are not to be used on the school site to protect student safety and should be left in the classroom teacher’s drawer throughout the day. Classrooms are locked when classes are out of the room.

 

ASSEMBLIES

School assemblies occur fortnightly (even weeks) on Wednesday mornings, starting at 9am and families are encouraged to attend. Classes take turns in presenting the assemblies so that students can share their learning. At each assembly, each class presents Success Helper Awards to 2 students who have demonstrated one or more of the schools REBE capabilities. Teachers will inform parents/carers if their child is receiving an award so they can attend.

 

SCHOOL PHOTOGRAPHS

A professional photographer is engaged each year to take photos of all students and staff. Pre-printed order envelopes are provided with additional information via our newsletter and Class Dojo.

 

PARENT INVOLVEMENT

Parents are encouraged to help within the school on a variety of different levels.

Classroom – The class teacher may ask for specific help with reading or class activities. Parent help is also requested for excursions.

Governing Council – Parents can serve as members on the Governing Council.

Interviews – Parents are encouraged to attend parent/student/teacher conferences.

OUT OF SCHOOL HOURS CARE

Out of School Hours Care for families that require before and after school care for both Preschool and School students is available at Para Hills School, run by YMCA South Australia. Para Hills School OSHC collaborates with Para Hills West Primary School OSHC (Balkara Road, Para Hills West) to offer Vacation Care from their premises.

Enrolling and booking your child into OSHC can be completed online through the My Family Lounge platform. My Family Lounge enables parents to enrol their children and manage their OSHC account. My Family Lounge can accept ongoing, casual (one-off), and vacation care bookings.

LOST PROPERTY

Lost property is stored in the office area. Children and parents are encouraged to check for missing items when possible. Please ensure all items are clearly marked with your child’s name as all named articles are sorted and returned to children via classrooms. Reminders will be placed in the school newsletter and at the end of each term, unclaimed and unnamed items are disposed of.

PERSONAL PROPERTY

We strongly discourage students from bringing anything of value (including sentimental) to school as we cannot accept responsibility if items are misplaced or damaged.

INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY

On days when temperatures reach 35° or above, there is rain or environmental concerns, as per Bureau of Meteorology advice, children will remain in their classrooms and engage in indoor activities. If it is raining in the morning 8:30 – 8:50, the teacher on duty will open up the gym where students can sit in their class groups.
